Clinique is one of those odd lines for me. It's very hit-or-miss. When they miss, they hand us something that is, at best, "eh" and at worst "this is one of the worst products I've ever put on my face." However, when they hit, they hit it out of the park with an absolutely fabulous product. Take the Day Off Balm is one of those "hit" products, and has become an indispensable part of my daily regimen.
Take the Day Off Balm
Take the Day Off Balm (TTDOB) is an oil-based cleanser with a twist: rather than being a messy oil, it's presented as a user-friendly, thick balm. This allows it to be easily manipulated in your hand and keeps it from sliding down the drain before you can get it on your face. Note the almost waxy consistency in the jar:
I use TTDOB to remove my makeup (including eye makeup) before I actually cleanse my skin. According to Clinique, this is a one-step cleanser, but I still prefer to follow with an additional foaming cleanser; your mileage may vary. Regardless, it's unique in many ways, and is extremely effective.
At first look, TTDOB appears to be waxy. As a matter of fact, you literally have to scrape it off the top to get it onto your finger. However, as soon as it hits the warmth of your fingers, it begins to melt into an oily consistency and becomes easy to manipulate and spread across the skin. It positively EATS makeup! Even waterproof makeup doesn't stand a chance against this stuff. It dissolves immediately, leaving no trace behind. Best yet, it is emulsified with warm water and easily rinsed off, leaving no oily residue.
To use, I scrape a small amount onto my finger and rub it between the fingers of both hands until it has melted completely into a liquid form. I then rub it into my skin for about 30 seconds, giving it time to fully dissolve any makeup or sunscreen I may have on. Once everything has dissolved, I wet my fingers with a little bit of warm water and rub the water into the TTDOB that is on my face, allowing the mixture to emulsify. I then rinse well with warm water, leaving no trace behind. As I stated above, I then follow with a foaming or lotion cleanser, but this is not a necessary step, just a preference.
TTDOB is an excellent cleanser. I find it to be as effective (or more so) than cleansing oils, yet because of the thicker consistency it is much easier to work with and I don't find it running down the drain the way my oil cleansers often do. It dissolves makeup and sunscreen quickly and completely and rinses clean without drying my skin. I have come to depend on this as part of my nightly routine.
I highly recommend Take the Day Off Balm to anyone who wears either waterproof sunscreen or moderate to heavy makeup each day.
