So, have you heard about the new Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet lipsticks? They're being touted as creamy, long-lasting mattes in a lovely array of colors, ranging from the most neutral nude to a brilliant fiery red. In keeping with my new vow to veer away from my typical "red-reds", I chose the gorgeous La Sensuelle as my first foray into the line. Does it live up to all the hype?
La Sensuelle, admittedly, is in the red family. In my defense, I tried several of the other colors in the fairly limited but very well-edited and broad range, and none of them worked well for me...most were simply too neutral, which will positively thrill most of you. However, given my proclivity for "look at me" lips, I ended up narrowing my choice down to the deep red La Fascinante and La Sensuelle, a stunning deep berry with undertones of red. I chose La Sensuelle because it was different from most of my other colors and the blue tones set off my skin and teeth beautifully.
The Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Lip Coulour lipsticks are currently being marketed as a limited edition, which makes no sense to me. They have an outstanding formula and add something completely new (and needed) to the Chanel lip collection. Why they would only offer them as a limited edition is beyond me, and I have a strong suspicion that they will get a permanent place in the line if they get the attention they deserve from the public. And yes, they do deserve your attention.
The Rouge Allure Velvet formula is simply outstanding. It's rich and creamy and applies like a dream with no tugging, pulling, or skipping. It literally glides onto the lips like satin. The finish is softly matte rather than harsh and dry the way so many mattes tend to get. The color lasts literally all day. I applied it straight from the tube at 7:00 am and it still looked good at 3:00, despite my eating lunch, drinking a soda and a bottle of water, and talking excessively to my employees all day. The color faded evenly without leaving the dreaded ring behind.I did experience some dryness a couple of hours in, but that's to be expected with any matte formula and the creaminess lasted far longer than I expected. If you are concerned about dryness, you may want to prime your lips with a balm before applying the lip color. I personally just add balm on top of the color as needed.
Here are some shots of the color:

La Sensuelle is a deep berry with red tones. On the lips, it gives great color without standing out. This is truly an office-worthy red that will give you a sophisticated, polished look without being at all over-the-top. It's amazing when paired with a black, navy or white top. It's deep enough to work for evening but also works with jeans. In short, it's a fantastically versatile color that can literally be worn at any time with virtually any type of outfit.
Finally, here's a shot of my lips:
As you can see above, it gives effect of being a red while remaining just subdued enough to be appropriate anywhere, and it's a great "starter red" for those of you who aren't quite ready for one of the vivid pin-up girl shades.
Bottom Line: This is an amazing color suitable for just about anyone. More importantly, the Rouge Allure Velvet is an incredible formula which offers new depth to the Chanel line, as they were sorely in need of a matte formulation. The application is smooth and comfortable, wear time is outstanding, and there is no bleeding or migrating. Overall, I'm extremely impressed with this lipstick and plan to get a backup in case the folks at Chanel stick to their guns and keep the line a limited edition.
