I'm always on the lookout for good hair products that actually work with my thin, fine, straight hair. It's difficult to even find thickening or volumizing products that don't weigh it down or make it stringy, crunchy, clumpy, or otherwise disgusting. I've tried all sorts of serums, lotions, cremes, balms, oils, gels and mousses, with varying degrees of success...but no standout so far. So when I got a tip from an SA at Sephora about Phyto Phytocane Revitalizing Serum, I figured it was worth a try, even though the price was high at $50.
Phytocane Revitalizing Serum is specifically marketed to women with thinning hair. My hair is actually growing back right now. I lost a ton of it for several years while taking a migraine-preventive medication. I didn't realize it was the med that was causing my near-baldness until I finally, in desperation, started looking it up online and--boom!!-- turns out tons of people had the same problem I had. I stopped the medication shortly thereafter, and now after several months of having it out of my system I have all sorts of 2-inch sprigs of hair sprouting all over my head. Yay!
However, even though it's growing back, my hair is still far from being thick and lustrous like I'd prefer, so I keep looking for products that will help it continue to grow as well as possibly helping to thicken the individual shafts of hair (I don't know if that's possible, but one can dream). So when the SA at Sephora started telling me about Phytocane, I drank the kool-aid and decided to give it a try.
Phytocane Revitalizing Serum is specifically targeted for women with temporary thinning of the hair. I figured that would describe me to a "T" since my hair was technically only temporarily thinning (even though it felt like forever) due to medication. Phytocane is meant to combat thinning hair while also providing anti-aging benefits. It contains a synergy of botanical active ingredients including viburnum bark and ginko biloba extracts and a complex of sulphured amino acids. These are supposed to boost intercellular exchanges between the hair bulb and its environment while also providing nutrients for healthy hair growth. The formula also includes B vitamins to promote keratin production. Since keratin is what hair is made of, it stands to reason that increasing keratin production will increase hair density and possibly hair diameter. I'm in!
Phytocane is sold as ampules, shown below. Each ampule equals one application; simply break the ampule open and apply to roots across the scalp. It's applied to damp, clean hair and is a leave-in treatment.
The directions state that you should begin with the "intensive treatment", which requires use 2-3 times a week for 4 weeks. You can then go on "maintenance treatment", applying once a week for 2-3 months. You can then repeat the "intensive" phase.
After about 6 weeks of use, I have to say that this product has really worked for me! I'm shocked. It's a watery consistency, so it doesn't weigh my hair down...as a matter of fact, it gives enough of a boost to my hair that I don't need mousse on the days I use it. I don't know how to measure the diameter of an individual hair, so I can't speak for certain as to whether my hair is actually denser, but I can say that with consistent use, I've started noticing that my scalp is now barely visible, where I used to have an almost-bald spot on top of my head. Of course, as I stated, my hair has been growing back in, so that has something to do with it. Nonetheless, as soon as I began using Phytocane, I noticed an almost immediate difference in my hair. It's thicker, fuller, more manageable, and has much more body. It also straightens more easily and seems heavier at the ends, which is much needed for my extremely fine, flyaway hair.
Bottom Line: I rarely recommend a hair product, which is why so few have been featured on this blog. However, I just bought my second (!) box of ampules and intend to continue with this treatment indefinitely. It's had a remarkable effect on my hair. If you have thinning or extremely fine hair, it's a must-have.
