Spots No More! Kiehl's Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution Review

In the past, I was never interested in products promising to remove dark spots from the skin, because I didn't have any. Or so I thought. Then I went for a facial and the aesthetician commented that I had some signs of sun damage. Huh. So of course I went home and examined my skin up-close and personal, and there they were...a few relatively light sun spots had suddenly popped up on my otherwise clear but still 42-year-old cheeks. Bummer. Here I'd been religiously applying sunscreen for decades, yet the burns I got as a child were still coming back to bite me on the butt.

Needless to say, these small spots soon began jumping out at me in the mirror every day, and I became fixated on them. I'm 99.999% certain that nobody else on the planet has ever noticed them, but to me they were glaring examples of the fact that I am, indeed, aging. So I began a quest to find a great spot remover. I've tried versions by several different lines but never bothered to review them because, while they were generally beneficial for my skin, they did nothing to the spots.

However, when I was at Nordstrom about a month ago, I stopped at the Kiehl's counter to check out their newest product-- the Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution. By this time, I'd pretty much decided that I would have to have laser therapy to rid myself of my dark spots, but I've always had great success with Kiehl's. I love their Powerful Strength Line-Reducing ConcentrateCreme de Corps body creme, and many other products. Generally speaking, I can say that I've been pleased with every item I've tried from Kiehl's, which is why I took the plunge and bought the Clearly Corrective.

Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution is a clear, almost watery gel that spreads very easily and sinks immediately into the skin leaving it feeling soft and refreshed. It's primary active ingredient is Activated C, an extremely stable form of Vitamin C that doesn't lose efficacy or discolor over time. It works in four ways to eliminate and prevent dark spots on the skin:

  1. Prevents melanin clusters to prevent dark spots.
  2. Decreases melanin production.
  3. Deters the transfer of melanin to the skin's surface.
  4. Breaks up existing melanin clusters.
In addition to the Activated C, Clearly Corrective contains Peony Extract to help prevent dark spots and discoloration, as well as White Birch Extract to enhance clarity and luminosity. Together, these ingredients form a powerhouse combination to fight those pesky brown spots. And fight them they do! I began using this product about 4 weeks ago and can say that the largest brown spot on my left cheekbone has lightened by approximately 50%. It used to show through just a tiny bit even with regular foundation...now a mere swipe of tinted moisturizer completely obscures it. And tinted moisturizer is all I'm using these days because my skin has become so clear and luminous. It was never bad, but I always felt the need to use foundation, not really to cover blemishes or flaws, but to completely even out my complexion. Now my complexion is completely even on its own...without any help. I use tinted moisturizer (Kiehl's has a great one I'll be reviewing soon) more for the moisture and to keep flakies at bay than for the coverage.

Bottom Line: This is one of the few times I have been truly overjoyed at the effects I've gotten from a skin care product. Typically, I'm happy with skin care as long as it doesn't cause breakouts and keeps my skin hydrated and wrinkle-free. This is the first time I've actually relied on a serum to correct a problem, and Clearly Corrective  Dark Spot Solution has done far more than I'd hoped. I'm guessing that by the end of next month my skin will have improved even more. This one is most definitely a holy grail item for me!

Kiehl's products can be found at many fine department stores as well as online at Kiehls.com.

OR...sadly, I didn't think to do "before" pictures on this! I can't believe I didn't do it. Just goes to show how little faith I had in it working!

How do you apply this? Just a few drops all over?

Cathy, I apply a few drops all over, but you can also just concentrate on trouble areas. It's almost the consistency of water, but with some slip, so it's easy to spread.
